OnePlus Never Settle

OnePlus May Be Slowly Shutting Down as OPPO Takes Full Control: Report

Update (21/01/2025 at 9:51 AM): OnePlus India Denies Shutdown Rumours

Update: OnePlus has now responded to the recent rumours. Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India, has clarified that reports claiming OnePlus is shutting down are false. He added that OnePlus India’s business operations are continuing as normal, and urged people to verify information through official sources before sharing unverified claims.

OnePlus may be heading towards a slow shutdown, according to a new report. The brand is not officially closing yet, but many signs show that OPPO (its parent group) is reducing OnePlus operations step-by-step.

The report claims OnePlus is being “wound down”, meaning the company will continue only until it completes its remaining promises like device support, warranty, and software updates. After that, the future of OnePlus as a separate brand may become unclear.

OnePlus Sales Are Falling

One of the biggest reasons behind this situation is the decline in OnePlus smartphone sales.

The report says OnePlus shipments dropped sharply in 2024. While OPPO Group grew slightly, OnePlus saw major decline, which has created pressure inside the company.

Problems in India and Retail Stores Stopping Sales

India was considered OnePlus’s strongest market. However, in 2024, reports said around 4,500 offline retail stores stopped selling OnePlus devices.

Retailers reportedly complained about:

  • low profit margins
  • delayed warranty/service claim settlements
  • online vs offline pricing difference

This affected OnePlus heavily in the premium smartphone market in India.

Offices Closed and Teams Cut

The report also claims OnePlus is cutting teams and shutting offices quietly.

Some major claims include:

  • OnePlus US headquarters in Dallas reportedly closed in March 2024
  • OnePlus teams in Europe were reduced heavily
  • North America is now being handled by a very small team

These changes were not announced publicly, which is why many users did not notice it earlier.

Upcoming OnePlus Phones May Be Cancelled

Another strong sign is the possible cancellation of future products.

A separate recent report says:

  • OnePlus Open 2 foldable launch may be cancelled
  • a compact OnePlus flagship (reported as OnePlus 15s) may also be cancelled

If true, this shows OnePlus may be reducing high-cost and high-risk product categories like foldables.

OPPO Recently Did Similar Changes With Realme

The report also points out that OPPO recently pulled Realme back under its main structure in a major restructuring move. Some reports call it “synergy”, but the report says it involved workforce cuts and major internal changes.

This is why people believe OnePlus could be next in OPPO’s cost-cutting plan.

What This Means for OnePlus Users

The report clearly says OnePlus phones will not stop working, and customer support and updates should continue for existing devices.

So users should not panic right now.

But long term, users may start seeing:

  • fewer OnePlus launches
  • weaker presence in global markets
  • more OPPO control over OnePlus products
  • OnePlus becoming more like a “sub-brand” instead of an independent brand

OnePlus Has Not Made Any Official Statement

At the time of writing, OnePlus has not officially announced anything about shutting down. The report says OnePlus was contacted for comment, and any response may be added later.
